A Report of James Gillespie, The Clarinet. March 2008:
"Continuing int the "highlights" vein, Portugal's Clarinetes Ad Libitum closed out Tuesday evening's events with one of the most entertaining and impresive small clarinet ensemble performances I have ever heard. Played entirely from memory, their repertoire ran the gamut from jazz, latin, folk, klezmer, to Broadway show tunes, etc. Each of the players - Nuno Pinto, José Ricardo Freitas, Luís Filipe Santos, Tiago Abrantes, assisted ably by percussionist Hugo Vieira - was a virtuoso soloist in his own right, and when combined into the whole ensemble made for a unified and completely simpatico approach to music making that one rarely hears. Their joy of playing, dedication and enthusiasm for what they were doing was indeed infectious, and the audience demanded encore after encore. Wow!" |
